چکیده

This study describes a methodology to design a custom-made cranial prosthesis for a patient who suffered injuries from road traffic accident. Computer based cranial defect reconstruction techniques is developed. The design approach was based on the 3D reconstruction of the skull of the patient, obtained by a CT scan. Then a reverse engineering (RE) method is used to reconstruct the defect prosthesis computer-aided design (CAD) model. Once the prosthesis CAD design was completed, the 3D models the skull and the prosthesis were transported into Rapid Prototyping (RP) machine to fabricate the physical model. Finally, the RP model is directly used to produce the biomaterial calcium phosphate cement (CPC) prosthesis. The prosthesis was successfully implanted and a satisfactory result was obtained by using this design method. *Corresponding author: Sekou Singare, Associate Professor, College of Mechanical Engineering, Dongguan University of Technology, Dongguan, Dongguan 523808, China, Tel: 0769-22861122; Fax: 0769-22861122; E-mail: [email protected] Received April 13, 2017; Accepted April 23, 2017; Published April 29, 2017 Citation: Singare S, Shenggui C, Li N (2017) The Benefit of 3D Printing in Medical Field: Example Frontal Defect Reconstruction. The application of three-dimensional printing techniques in the fi eld of oral and maxillofacial surgery

and reconstruction plates and morphologic reconstruction of bony defect areas are possible uses of 3D printing in fracture surgery or reconstructive surgery. The 3D printing technique can also be utilized in other areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery. For example, it would be very helpful to be able to design and fabricate a customized non-absorbable barrier of titanium mesh. In addition, 3D...

The use of 3D printing technology in human defect reconstruction-a review of cases study

In this paper, we report the benefit of Computer Tomography (CT), reverse engineering (RE) and rapid prototyping (RP) in individual implant production for maxillofacial surgery. The design and fabrication processes includes: a) processing medical image data of a patient’s pathologically defective area having a symmetrical part to construct a three-dimensional (3D) digital model; b) forming an i...
